Leon and Viola LaMere celebrated 90 years of life in a combined birthday party, and 68 years together with their family and friends on Oct. 7.

On Oct. 7, a 90 birthday celebration was held for both Leon and Viola LaMere at the Mooers Fire Station. Since Viola turned 90 in May and Leon will celebrate his day in December, the family decided to bring family and friends together at an in-between time. The open house made a great social time for over 160 guests who traveled from New Hampshire, Western New York, the Glens Falls area and Canada. The Sweet Adelines entertained with great music of the older times.

Leon and Viola celebrated their 68 wedding anniversary in June of this year. They started out their life together running a farm in Cannon Corners area and then in Mooers. After this they spent a few years in Chazy while Leon worked for Montgomery Wards and Viola worked in the Chazy Central Rural School cafeteria. They relocated to Mooers where they operated the LaMere’s IGA. After this Leon was employed by the Grand Union company where he opened many of the delis in the area. He then returned and returned from Montgomery Wards when they opened the new store at Pryamid Mall. During this time, Viola persued a career as a tablet inspector at Wyeth Laboratories. After retirement, they became snow birds and spent 16 years in Lakeland Florida.

Leon and Viola were both charter members in the Mooers Knights of Columbus and Auxiliary. Leon was the first grand knight for the 6136 council. He also served as treasurer for the Mooers Boy Scouts for several years. They both enjoyed singing with the St. Joseph’s choir and still enjoy trying their luck at weekly bingo.

They were blessed to have had all their family present at the party with the exception of one grandson Keagan, his wife Christie and their children, Madison and Tanner who reside in Anchorage Alaska. Keagan had just returned from deployment in Afghanistan days prior to the celebration. The party was hosted by their family daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Mooso, sons and daughters-in-laws Tom, Jeannie, Randy, Lynn, Tracey and Louise LaMere; grand children Kim and Tim Pinsonneault, Robb and Kris Mooso, Amber and Dave Atkinson, Courtney LaMere, Erin, Melissa, Branden Jordan LaMere and great grandchildren Cole and Rylee Pinsonneault, Owen and Payson Moose, Gage and Asher Atkinson.

A great afternoon was enjoyed by all.
